What would you do?

Here’s the e-mail I received from my student (this is copied and pasted word-for-word):

“Mrs. S. i was abscent today because i did not set my alarm for a.m. i accidentally set it for pm. will i be able to make up the exam? i know the syllabus says i can not make it up but is there an exception to stupidity?”

Here is an excerpt from my make-up policy (in the syllabus, given to them on the first day of class and posted on Angel in case they lose it)

Lecture Exams:

• Lecture exams may be made up only in extreme circumstances and only if your instructor is notified prior to, or immediately after (same day) the missed exam.
• Written documentation (i.e. doctor’s notes, funeral notices, court papers, police reports) must be provided to explain the extenuating circumstances. Having to work, waking up late, or making personal travel plans that coincide with an exam date are not considered extreme circumstances and will not be considered for make-up exams.

If this were any other exam, I wouldn’t have a problem saying no, but this was the final exam worth 20% of their grade. Prior to this incident the student was passing the class, so if you feel like giving me some advice…hit the link and answer one question:
